WeAreVR was a community event for Gorilla Tag which occurred on September 23, 2023. The event was based around getting as many players onto Gorilla Tag as possible, with a goal of 250k concurrent players in the game all at once.
Buildup (August 23 - September 23)
The event was first announced on August 23, 2023, a month prior to the event. It was hosted by Finger Painter VMT and Alpha Squad member Tux, who were able to gather over 100 other content creators to participate in the event.
During this time, Another Axiom announced that two exclusive cosmetics were going to appear in-game, the VR Badge and VR Headset.
Event (During September 23)
An hour before the event started, reports starting to come in based on how it was taking longer to connect to the multiplayer services for the game. Ten minutes before the event started, the multiplayer services for the game crashed, reportedly the concurrent player count went down drastically.
Fifteen minutes after the event started, the concurrent player count was shown in-game to be around 50k, however not even five minutes later it would drop down to around 11k concurrent players.
Aftermath (Post September 23)
Lemming made an announcement in the official Gorilla Tag server with some information relating to how the event went:
- 146,399 total players participated in the event, most likely off by a few players
- 98,365 concurrent players active before the multiplayer servers "exploded, fell off a cliff, exploded again, and then were crushed by a boulder"
Later the next day on September 24, 2023, the WeAreVR cosmetics were made no longer purchasable in the game.
