Locomotion is the primary factor when it comes to the player's movement in Gorilla Tag.
Essentials[]
The Locomotion in Gorilla Tag is vastly inflicted by the surfaces the player touches. When you move your hand on a surface, you will move in the opposite direction. The essential movement is you go higher and farther or shorter and closer, it is as simple as hitting hard to go far, or hitting soft to go little distance.
Slippery Surfaces[]
Similar to essential movement, you can jump and move freely, but you have no traction on the surface. This leads to very high speeds with little control, you can only barely influence the direction by standing and steering on one hand. When moving up a slope with too little momentum leads to steer with hand being inverted. These can be found in Forest, Clouds, Canyons, Mountain and City. (Found in the Competitive Course) the slide in Monke Blocks have slipperiness. ice blocks from the Attic were also slippery altho were not brought back in the Monke block rework. ice blocks may return in the future in either an update or a part in Playsets (They have already been returned)
Air Currents[]
Particles that are the air in certain places tell you an air current is present. (Unless it is keeping you out of the map. In that case, they are invisible) If you enter it, you go flying in one direction. The animation depicts swirls towards one direction in a tube shape, showing the direction of the flight. You can slightly change trajectory by jumping in different angles and speeds. These can be found in Forest, Canyon, Mountain, Clouds, Beach, and City (found at entrance to Rotational Maps) Monkeblocks that features Air Currents are fans.
Moving Objects[]
Usually found permanently in maps (most likely in old Clouds) a moving object is a hitbox with a set path, allowing you to interact or "ride" them. Most are required for you to try to stay on yourself but a few seasonal objects like the Broom you need to grab them to ride it. Due to some glitches, some objects are known to launch you when exploited properly.
Ropes[]
Ropes are typically long moving objects put together with segments, each segment can be grabbed and swung by the player. The rope moves depending on the amount of velocity the player has when grabbing it, by combining this you can occasionally achieve the maximum player speed, which can additionally be used to exploit. These can be found in Caves, Canyons, Metropolis and Beach. Ropes can also be found in Monkeblocks.
Ziplines[]
Ziplines are typically long static objects put together with segments, each segment can be grabbed by the player, and can drag them down the zipline consistently. An efficient method of scaling up a zipline, is by throwing yourself forward and up when you grab a zipline. These are typically found in Canyons and Beach.
Swimming[]
This is similar to regular ground movement, but the water gives much less resistance. That means you sink into it while seeing through with a blue hue. Swimming needs lots of momentum to move quickly, the direction of your paddling is dependent on the direction of your palms. Continuous paddling can increase to fast speeds. Be careful because it takes a moment to get to high speeds, you are temporarily vulnerable.
Hang Gliders[]
Hang Gliders can be found in Clouds and/or in some custom maps in Virtual Stump, they can be taken by the player and allow them to glide around the map and be elevated by an air current made for it.
Mutated Snowballs[]
Mutated Snowballs are a game mechanic added on January 10, 2025, where players can pick them up and combine them to create larger snowballs. When thrown, any monke within a certain radius are pushed away from the impact, the larger the snowball, the larger the radius and push force. Increased velocity will also increase push force. These can be utilised to reach high places or to gain extra speed to excape pursuers. Snowballs have an exclusive texture featuring snow surrounded by ice cracks, akin to the texture of the Lava Monke. Snowballs can be found exclusively in the Mountain map and in seasonal updates.
Hoverboards[]
The Hoverboard is a game mechanic first introduced on February 21st, 2025, as part of the Hoverpark map. Players can move around the Hoverpark by holding onto their Hoverboard with one hand while using normal locomotion with the other. Upon initial release, the Hoverboard had a significant number of issues. One month later, the Hoverpark was revamped and a hidden tunnel was opened, revealing multiple Hoverboard racetracks where players can race each other in customizable lap amounts.
