Gorilla Tag Wiki

A Game Mode is a variation of gameplay which affect how the game mechanics behave within the context of the Game Mode. The current Game Mode can be changed using a selection interface often available alongside computer terminals and wardrobes. All maps allow gamemodes with the exception of City, Arcade, Basement, Critters or Ghost reactor - unless in a Private Lobby.

Permanent Game Modes[]

These Game Modes are permanently available for use in Gorilla Tag in most maps.

Cover Name Description Availability
Casual Casual is a game mode with no competitive taggers. It's exclusively for socialization, finding mutual communities, private lobbies, etc. Any map except Crawlspace.
Infection Infection is the primary game mode. It starts with one lava monke chosen at random. Whoever is tagged by the lava monke also becomes one, continuing until everyone is tagged. Then the match restarts, and a new lava monke is chosen. If there are three or fewer players, the game mode will be normal tag instead of infection. Any map except Arena, Crawlspace, Critters and Ghost reactor
Prop Haunt Prop Haunt is a gamemode only in Bayou. It features a lot of cosmetics on each floor of the house. It is like Infection but the players that are hiders have to blend in with the cosmetics and try not to get found. Bayou Exclusive

Limited Game Modes[]

These Game Modes are temporarily available for use in Gorilla Tag, they are often changed every month or two. this category of game mode was introduced in update 1.1.85. guardian and freeze tag dont have a limited time sticker anymore so they might be permanent

Cover Name Description Availability
Guardian In Guardian mode, one player is the "Guardian" and is big, while the rest of the players remain normal-sized. The objective for the Guardian is to defend the Meteor when it falls from the sky, while the rest of the players aim to tap on the Meteor last to become the next Guardian. To defend the Meteor, the Guardian can either slap other players away, or pick up and move players. All maps that allow Gamemodes except Hoverpark, Arena or Crawlspace.
Freeze Tag Freeze Tag is a unique Gamemode in which some players chosen at random to become "ice monkes", the number of which is determined by the amount of players in the server. The ice monkes can freeze other players by tagging them, causing them to freeze. A frozen monke will gain ice blocks on their hands - preventing movement as well as on their torso. after a few seconds, they too will become ice monkes. However, other players can prevent this transformation by tagging the frozen player before they fully freeze, returning them to normal. The game continues until all players have been frozen, and a new round begins with new ice monkes are chosen. All maps that allow Gamemodes except Hoverpark, Arena or Crawlspace.
Hunt In Hunt, the match starts once there are at least four players. Everyone has a hunt watch which displays a player's name, color, cosmetics, and distance. The goal is to hunt your secret target while avoiding being tagged and turned into a blue lava monke. blue lava monkes temporarily slow down alive players which they tag. The more they get tagged, the slower they get. The match ends when there are only two sole hunters remaining. Crawlspace exclusive.
Paintbrawl Paintbrawl is a game mode in which players use slingshots to shoot paint at opponents. Slingshots can be fired at other players to pop their balloons. When a player is hit, they become invulnerable for a short period of time. When a player runs out of balloons, they will be eliminated and can only slow down living players on the opposite with their slingshot. Unavailable - may return in future updates.
Ambush Ambush is a game mode similar to Infection with the difference of tagged players being invisible, however, if a "ghost monke" touches the ground with their hands, yellow particles will be emited, warning nearby players of their presence. Unavailable - may return in future updates.
Ghost Tag "Ghost Tag" is a Halloween exclusive Gamemode in Gorilla Tag. Similar to Ambush, but no yellow particles are produced upon contact with the ground. Instead, players can utilize the crystal balls around the map to view the ghosts. Unavailable - may return in future updates.
